U.S. Domestic Migration Explorer

This U.S. Domestic Migration Explorer provides access to publicly available migration statistics based on IRS Statistics of Income (SOI) Tax Stats. These figures reflect annual population movements between U.S. states, as well as adjusted gross income (AGI) movements between U.S. states, as reported through changes in federal individual income tax filings.

This data includes the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, covering the years 2012-2013 through 2021-2022. Data reflecting migration foreign migration flows to and from the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia has been excluded.

Use the State Summary Section to select a state and view a summary of net domestic migration for the state, or use the State-to-State Section to select a state and explore migration flows to and from other states, including neighboring states or any combination of your choosing. The data offers valuable insight into domestic mobility patterns over time but should be interpreted with awareness of its limitations.
